83% of the Kenyan working population is employed within the informal sector, which is not fully recognised as an important driver of economic growth in the country. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, 1.7 million Kenyans have been rendered jobless, and youths under 35 years of age are the most affected.
According to Nation Media Group, 4 million youths between 20 and 35 years of age are jobless. We are determined to help the SMEs that were affected during the pandemic, and the new SMEs that emerged during it.

A business accelerator programme supporting MSMEs in the green and circular economy, and retooling youth skills for climate action.
Due to the urgency of climate change challenges globally, we started a business accelerator programme dubbed the ‘Beyond 2 Degrees’ initiative, which will support MSMEs in the green and circular economy.
Climate action is needed urgently to keep global temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius. That is why we named our initiative ‘Beyond 2 Degrees’: as a reminder of the world’s climate goal, which we are likely to miss because of a growing human population and intense human activities such as the use of fossil fuels, deforestation and unsustainable agriculture, which decrease the availability of clean water and nutritious food.
We need to prevent global average temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius, and we are almost halfway to doubling.
Our initiative will promote youth skills retooling, so that young people can take up climate action as an opportunity to offer impactful solutions to society and contribute towards net-zero carbon emissions globally.

A business incubation programme in partnership with Uchumi supermarkets.
Uchumi Supermarket PLC in partnership with Vijana Reloaded, a youth entrepreneurship social enterprise, has come up with the Enable and Connect incubation programme. It aims to support the local cottage industry owned by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), given that 83% of employment in Kenya originates from the informal sector.
Through the Enable & Connect programme, we have created a business incubation hub that provides an enabling environment for MSMEs to thrive. We do this by supporting them with business management training and mentorship, and by showcasing their products in retail market spaces. This helps create youth employment and promotes Buy Kenya Build Kenya. The objective is to promote small-scale cottage industry production.
To assist 10,000 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the cottage industry to get their products onto retail supermarket shelves, and to create 100,000 youth employment opportunities by 2026.

83% of Kenya’s working population is employed within the informal sector.
Most of these small and medium-sized businesses cannot access credit facilities because of the nature of their operations, and are not fully recognised as an important sector in the growth of the economy.
The Inua Bizz initiative was started to help formalise small and medium-sized businesses by providing business management training and coaching, so that the informal sector can thrive better and provide employment opportunities to youths. According to the Central Bank of Kenya, 75% of small businesses would be out of operation after the pandemic, rendering unemployment rates at 40%.
